Will Apple Spoil Microsoft's Skype Party?

Apple could almost instantly severely devalue Microsoft's $8.5 Billion purchase of Skype with one simple move.  The big question is, do they have the focus to do it?  It shouldn't be that crazy of an idea either, seeing that they already indirectly promised almost a year ago that they would try and do it:

Yep, when Steve Jobs announced FaceTime at 2010's WWDC he said it would be set up as an industry standard.  It's coming up to one year later and we've heard very little about it.  When the all solid-state Macbook Airs were announced later on in 2010, Steve very briefly answered a question concerning the matter.  He didn't seem to rule it out, depending on how you interpret his answer.

Is Apple still working on making FaceTime an open standard?  Or is this just another case of one of Apple's small teams* losing interest in a project or being moved onto something else?

* The fact that I can't link directly to the Fortune magazine article on the iPad is reason #551 why old media will still fail even with the iPad.
